I finished The Devil in Vienna a couple nights ago and overall, it was actully pretty good! It was a little touch inipropriate at times, but it was fine overall. I'm very glad everything ended up ok, and hope that Inge and Lieselotte see each other again! This book left me hanging a little bit though. Like, for instance, what happened with O.O., and Why did the telegra say Cristian Lowberg, and not Tommi's dad's real name? I gave this book a 3 out of 5 stars overall. How did you like it?
Hi everyone. I finished our book! I thought it was very good. That just shows that if you keep reading, the book is bound to get better! I wonder what will happen to Inge and Lieselotte? Will they ever see each other again? Or did the war tear them apart like it did to so many people? Right before the boom ended, I found a very sad and moving quote, I'll share it with you here, "And then suddenly, when I heard Liseslotte's voice, it hit me that we were leaving forever. It hadn't felt real until that moment." Isn't that sad that they might never see each other again? Tell me what you guys think
Yes, Hallie, I totally agree with you! I also wonder if Lieselotte and Inge were torn apart, or wrote to each other, or what. If you keep reading it will get better, don't judge a book by it's cover!
Hi!! I think the end of this book is a little bit depressing, but also interesting. I think it has a happy yet sad ending. I think its good that Liesolotte moves back, but it is very depressing on how badley the Jews are getting treated. It does make it exiting when Inge moves away because now she won't be treaded that badley. Although still the other Jews have to suffer. Do u girls like how this book ended? What rating would you give this book 1-10?? I am interested to see your opinions on how this book ended!
Yes, I thought it was especially sad when the Nazis came to Inge's front door. They way Inge and Mutti reacted was very sad as well, it was like they thought they would never see O.O and Vati again. It was depressing how people actually laughed at the Jewish people cleaning the street and through stuff at them and made them suffer! Claire, I would probably give the book a 7 or 8. I did not like how the ending left us hanging.
I think this book was b=depressing a little bit as well, but it was still good:). Although next time, I'd maybe not want the book I read in diary form, because like Hallie, I agree it was very hard to follow in the beginning. I wonder if Austria speaks english, or the book was in another language but translated. Who knows!
In response to Ellie's question, I wonder if Inge and Tommi will get married someday! That would be a really cool sequel, like, how their lives turn out after the war!
I would say maybe Lieselotte, because I think no one should be treated like the Jews were. I would have tryed to stick up for them as much as possible if I were her.
I really liked blogging. It is a fun way to discuss the book with your group and ask questions. I also helped me to get more of an understanding for the book. We could also see what our other group members thought. I may be easier to just talk to your group in person, but this was much more fun!!!!!
Mrs. Smith, I thought blogging was really fun! It's somthing that I have never done before. It was a lot more fun than just talking to each other. I loved how different it was! I think you should do this with your 6th graders next year too! Thank you!
I think the whole blogging experience was fun. It was very different and that was cool as well. I liked that we had a lot to talk about, and It was just plain fun, and a great experience. Different than talking in small groups like we did when we read group books last year. The whole overall experience, and I woulld totally do it again if I had the chance.
Each week, you will be required to respond to the section of reading you have completed. Include questions, reactions, favorite parts, etc. You then must respond to what each of your other lit circle members wrote as well. Be sure to provide possible answers to your team members’ questions. Ask them questions about their reactions to the reading. Have fun!
Example Response
John Smith: Wow! I am so interested in this book. Could you imagine being orphaned at our age and having to be able to survive on our own? Crispin has no other relatives to take him in, and it sounds like he is not very accepted in his village. I wonder why John Aycliff is after him? Life was so different during this time period. People could be killed for doing what we consider very minor things. Life sure was difficult. I am curious to know what you guys think about this book. Do you think Crispin will stay in Stromford or run away? How will he escape John Aycliff?
BLOG #3 DISCUSSION IDEAS
Discuss the injustices that occur in your book(s). Provide specific examples and your reaction.
Knowing what we do now about the Holocaust and the murder of over 6,000,000 Jewish people, how do you feel knowing that there are genocides still going on today? It is estimated that anywhere between 200,000- 400,000 civilians have been killed in Darfur since 2003. What does this say about our civilization that events like this still occur? What can we do to help prevent this type of situation from occurring?

I hope she writes a sequel (Doris better:D!), I don't like being hung! I wonder if she will....
hmmmm.... out of 10? I don't know.... 5 or 6????? What about you?
I had a few questions about Lieselotte's Father. First of all, what postion was he? Was he a commandent? or General? Did he know Hitler personally?
oops, sorry my comment was published twice, whoops!
?????????????????
Well im not a fan of historical fiction...so I would give this book aroung a 4. How about you hallie?
I wonder what will happen to Inge and Tommi's relationship, and how Inge and Lieselotte's families will be?

hmmm..good questions Ellie!
I'm not the biggest historical fiction person either, I'd say it was a 5.
Actually I'm changing my answer to a 6, becuase of how hard it was to follow in the beginning
hehe thanks!
yeah...i personally think this book deserves a 4. It had a bad beginning and end.
What character can u gir;ls relate to the most? why?

I'm not sure what character I relate to and would be. Maybe Inge? But then again not... great question Claire!I guess actully I'd be more Lieslotte.
I would say maybe Lieselotte, because I think no one should be treated like the Jews were. I would have tryed to stick up for them as much as possible if I were her.
Yeah Hallie, that would be cool, and great to. And it woldn't really be historical fiction, more romance!
Thanks and Ellie I agree definently one of those girls...but probably Liesolotte!!
Same with you hallie
Ellie, I think the book was wirtten in English becuase if you read the author's note, it says that she was born in Vienna, but then moved to Austria.
hi
Would you girls reccomend this book?
E was me. Sorry, I didn't know if you could tell! :D
But isn't Vienna in Austria? Wait, what? I'm confused now!
Claire, I probably would not recommened this book to younger children. MAybe to adults the story would be more intresing
