After reading parts of this book it shows you how tough life was for Jews during this time period. I can't imgaine living as a orphan not knowing anything bout your family. ALso to have to run around town stealing things from people JUST so you could survive seems so unreal and sad. People's lifes were also interfeared with by the "blackboots" who highy disliked the Jews. They would force them to do embarassing, offensive things out in the public that had no reasoning to them what so ever. These things seem crazy to us but this was their everyday life.

hello. I'm not that far into the book but so far it's pretty good. It seems to be a little bit confusing but i think i get it. This book is starting to remind me of The Breadwinner. Do you think so?? I think the bomb, destroyed bulidings, and all the war. I think I'm going to like this book more as I get into.It really sad. This showsme just how lucky I am to be an American

I think Milkweed is a great book so far. The main character, Stopthief, knows close to nothing. When Uri's friends first met him they all said, "He is definatly a Jew." and Stopthief asked, "What's a Jew?" This book also demonstrates a lot of prejudice. One boy said that Jews are animals. Another called the bugs. This also shows how reputations are made.

Yeah. The Book does remind me of Breadwinner because of how they would have to go into structures to stay safe from the bombings. Do you think Stoptheif is actually gonna become a Jackboot someday like he wants to?

Matthew Levitt said...

Does anyone know where Uri and his friends are living?

Matthew Levitt said...

I don't think he will become a Jackboot, once he finds out what they are doing.

Mattie said...

Yeah Matthew on the back of the book it says they are in Warsaw.

Matthew Levitt said...

Oh, okay thank you.

I agree Mattie. I think thats it's so sad that anyone would have to live like that. It unfair that little kids have to live like this not knowing anything about who they are or where they came from. It's unbelievable. It's a good book though. Hearing these things just make me want to read more. Those kids who were calling him a Jew were just being steriotypical.

Why do people hate gypsys so much?

Mattie said...

Wait is Stoptheif a Jew or not? Because he says he is a Gypsy but that just might be because he doesn't know his past.

It's reallly upsetting to know that they have no parents or anyoone to take take of them and like Mattie said having to steal just to stay alive. These kids are living in a Barber Shop. Their source of shower is in a old building. Why do they have to live like this???

Matthew Levitt said...

Sorry Mattie, I don't know either. Because all the boys call him a Jew but he says he is a gypsy.

Mattie said...

It's sad that the only reason they have to live like that is because of all the bombings and maybe their past homes were destroyed, and they have no other choice. How far is everyone in this book?

Matthew Levitt said...

Emma, it is world war 2. A lot of people lived like that.

Emma said...

Ya i don't really know because Stoptheif doesn't know much about his past but he did remember being a gypsy, but they all think that he is a Jew so i don't really know. I'm just confused about the begginning and how all he could remember is running. I didn't understand that part.
