I'm not that far into the book yet, but from what I've read it's been pretty good. I think that it was innapropiet on pages 10 and 11. How about you guys? Does it get better the further into the book? I'm hoping it does, because right now I'm not really interested.

Hi everyone! How do you like our book? I think it's very good so far. I'm wondering why the author wrote it in this journal entry style though. Sometimes that can be a little hard to follow. I like how Inge tells you all her memories about her years with Lieselotte in her journal. Can you imagine how it would be if you had a christian best friend at that time if you were jewish?

Katie said...

yeah, I wonder why it's in journal form too. My dad said it was a little like the Anne Frank concept.

The Devil in Vienna is an OK book, though it's somewhat hard to follow. I'm not too far, but it's OK so far, that's what I mean. It's interesting though.I think it's a lot different than everyone thought it was going to be. What do you guys think? But anyways, I wonder why Lieselotte moved away. Inge seems pretty sad that she did. I feel bad for her, but wonder why she hasn't made any new friends yet. I also wonder if Innge had any more friends or if Lieselotte was her only one. Changing the subject, pages 10 and 11 were disturbing, don't you think? Do you like this book so far?

I think it gets better as you get into it. I do agree with Kaite though, on pages 10-11 it is a litte wierd. Some of the memories later in the book are very sad becuase of them dealing with their different religions. It would also be very hard if your parents didn't want you to even talk to your best friend, wouldn't it?

Hallie Distel said...

Well, I'm pretty sure Lieselotte moved away becuase her father is a Nazi and had to move closer to headquarters. I also think maybe no one wants to be friends with Inge becuase she is Jewish. Imagine how sad that would be! Katie, that is a good connection, it is like Anne Frank! I was wondering, are Veti and Mutti what Inge calls her mom and dad?

Ellie Haun said...

It IS somewhat like Ann Frank. Yeah, I also wonder why it's in journal form. And it is pretty inapropriate on pages 10 and 11 I will say. It's pretty good once you get into it, but still just a little hard to follow. It just is. Is anyone at when she turns 13?I wonder how that will turn out...

Katie said...

Replying to Ellie, maybe Lieselotte had to move because her dad got transfered or because of the war.
Replying to Hallie, yeah I think it would be hard to have a really great friend and not be able to talk to them because of their religion. I can't even imagine that happening, Can you?

Hallie Distel said...

I am just at where she turns 13. Shes pretty excited and feels very independant. It is on page 60.

Ellie Haun said...

I'm not sure if she calls her mom and dad Veti and Mutti or not. Or are they housekeepers? It WOULD be sad for mostly everyone to be cristian except you and a few others. I would probably feel left out. Poor Inge.

Hallie Distel said...

No, Katie, I can't even begin to imagine, I have friends based on personality and not religion or what they look like. That is so horrible that people actually thought being Jewish is so bad!

Katie said...

Is there something that happens to her when she turns 13? Does she get visited by the devil again?

Hallie Distel said...

Yeah, the thing about Mutti and Veti is one example of how the book is hard to follow. Yesterday I was reading and they talked about a character named O.O. Does anyone know who that is?

Katie said...

I think O.O is her grandpa.
They call him O.O because of his name, i think. :)

Hallie Distel said...

No, I just started reading that part. All I've gotten to is that she takes a walk, without any parental supervision, so that is why she feels so independant

This book has shown that Lieslotte and Inge are true best friends. Nothing could ever break them apart. What about their different religions? Could that lead ther friendship to the end? Lieslotte is Jewish and Inge is Catholic. I wonder how they will manage to stay best friends? What do you think they could possibley do? This book has shown how important and strict religion is in Vienna. Inge is very afraid of the devil. Do you think that will impact anything in the story? From what I have read in The Devil in Vienna it has been pretty good and is very interesting. I am looking forward to see what everyone elese thinks of it!

Katie said...

That's waht my mom always says!!!

Hallie Distel said...

Oh Katie you are probably right that he is her Grandpa. They introduce new charcters a lot. That is something hard to follow about this book. Like, do you guys know if Evi is Inge's neighbor?

Ellie Haun said...

O.O. probably is her grandpa. How far are you guys? What page? I'm on page 36 or 37ish...

Claire Costa said...

Katie I couldn't agree more (to your first comment).I am hoping it will get a little bit better and get me so I never want to stop reading!

Ellie Haun said...

Claire- Well it's called The Devil in Vienna, but I don't know!(I'm not too far into the book right now)I wish we had some more time to read it right now. Do you?

Hallie Distel said...

Yes, I agree with Claire. When you have a true friend, somone who sticks by you no matter what, it shouldn't matter what they look like, or talk like, what religion they practice, or even the clothing they wear! I think this book is teaching me a very good lesson about friendship.

Katie said...

I don't know it Evi is inge's bro. I think he's Leisolette's brother

Ellie Haun said...

Evi? Who's he? What page are you on Katie!?

Claire Costa said...

I am only on page 20. From your comments, I can see that the plot has moved on and continues to explain how their religions are bringing them apart.

Ellie Haun said...

Yeah Hallie, it IS somewhat confusing, but I hope it gets better also. Everyone does!

Katie said...

Replying to one of Ellie's comments, I'm only on page 16, but i'll have alot more time to read this week end. i've been jampacked with homework!!!
Replying to Claire,(second comment) yeah, me too

Hallie Distel said...

I think Heinz was Lieselotte's brother, and Evi is just Inge's neighbor. I thought I would check with you guys to be sure though

Hallie Distel said...

Also, I am pretty confident Evi is a gril, but i don't know for sure

Ellie Haun said...

Same with me Katie! But I don't ever recall Inge ever saying/talking about Evi!

Katie said...

yeah I think you're right hallie

Claire Costa said...

Hallie-
I agree on the lesson this book is bringing out. I will now probably start to put a much bigger value on friendship because how hard it gets in this book.
Ellie-
Do you have any idea what the devil will impact? I am curious!!

Katie said...

bye for now!!!

Ellie haun said...

Ohhhhhh. Thanks Hallie! Yeah, Hienz is Lieselotte's brother. But that's all I know. I'll talk to you guys later!:D

Hallie Distel said...

I think it's very cool how Inge loves writeing and getting her feelings out on paper!

Ellie Haun said...

nope. no idea. Bibi!:)
